It's interesting you should say that. When I first finished reading this novel, I see that one of the comparisons I made was to the works of Tim Powers, who uses folkloric elements in his fantasy/adventure novels. It felt as if this was an attempt to do the same, only making up both the folklore and the adventure plot.
One more stray thought: I wonder if Chabon ever read much of Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd & Grey Mouser stories?
