Why is it 14 syllables? :confused:
I am studying Spanish Literature and could not understand why the following poem has 14 (7+7) syllables per line?

From Los milagros de Nuestra Se?ora, by Gonzalo de Berceo:

Dieron gracias a Dios de buena voluntad.

a la santa Re?na la madre de piedad,
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12
quien hizo tal milagro por su benignidad,
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 + 1 (verso agudo)
por quien est? m?s firme toda la cristiandad.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13

The numbers below each line is how I count it. Can anyone explain to me why I was wrong? Thank you.

I'm not an expert in Spanish, but they look like 14 syllable lines to me. My analysis would be:

Di-e-ron grac-ias a Di-os de bue-na vol-un-tad.
a la san-ta Re-?-na la ma-dre de pi-e-dad,
qui-en hi-zo tal mil-ag-ro por su ben-ig-ni-dad,
por qui-en es-t? m?s fir-me to-da la crist-ian-dad.

Don't forget that in Spanish metric, if the accent is on the last syllable of the last word of the verse, you have to add one to the count. However, if it's on the first syllable of the last word, you have to remove one.
