View Full Version : Places from Hell
There are, with respect to others' dream countries, some places which are hell on earth. Whole countries that fall into this category are perhaps rare, and villages, towns, and cities must also be rare, but areas to steer clear of in cities must be common. Maybe this thread will be deleted as soon as published as it's potentially dangerous, but surely we need to know about where it's safe to go or not.
Now, in Belize City, I'd take very good care.

Why this topic suddenly? Are you planning to travel? It depends on what you mean by hell. Airports are hell.
Why this topic suddenly?
I think it's partly Derridean, partly an antidote to Thomas's thread: from the dream of heaven comes, logically, the nightmare of hell.
Are you planning to travel?
Yes. France very soon, then Florida, then Thailand and Cambodia, then Appalachia, then - and I hope not too long after - France for good (or at least to settle down to). Anywhere but where we are now.
It depends on what you mean by hell.
At the moment, hell is other (English) people for us. The thread was intended to be subjective: just about others' experiences of different places. Belize is way up there for me - a hellhole to end all hellholes.
Airports are hell.
Not really, as you just get used to the changes since 9/11, or you give up going anywhere across expanses of water. Certainly the security in the States gets worse every time I go, but there was something very odd about last September, although I think we just got stuck in a loop - we went through a really tight security check, then were forced through the whole thing again - let's just call it a major city in the South!

In my own experience although Mexico has some of the most beautiful paradises on earth there are also terrible hellholes in here. I have visited some of the cities in the border with the US and they are really sad. Ciudad Juarez, Bolano's Santa Teresa has earned a terrible reputation, TIjuana is also an horrific city.
