The prestigious Rómulo Gallegos literary prize, worth 100,000 dollars and awarded every two years in Venezuela, was won by Argentine author Ricardo Piglia for his new novel Blanco Nocturno.

There's been virtually no coverage in the English-speaking press (as usual!), except for this brief report:

But you can read more about it in Spanish below:

Finalists included Damiela Eltit (Chile), Andrés Neuman and Sylvia Iparraguirre (Argentina), Manuel Rivas (Spain) and Arturo Ungar (Colombia). Former recipients of the Rómulo Gallegos are Mario Vargas Llosa, Gabriel García Márquez, Carlos Fuentes, Abel Posse, Elena Poniatowska and Roberto Bolaño, a.o.

I watched on the news the other day, and I said to myself: another big prize for Piglia, hope this comes without controversy. I think this one will be clean, because last year Blanco Nocturno was acclaimed as one of the best novels in Spanish. A lot of newspapers, cultural papers and other publications agree that it was a great novel. I haven't read it but I really want to. Can't tell how good Piglia is yet (I only read one of his novel and left me with more questions than answers) but what I can tell is that he has excellent public relationships across Latin America and Spain.

Does the novel exist in English translation? I'd actually heard of Piglia, but have read nothing by him. I see that the award has hardly spread at all outside of the Spanish-language press.

I don't think so. The novel was published last year but it must come soon with all the good critics this novel have had.
