In the country of Men by Hisham Matar. short listed in 2006 for Man Booker, this book by Anglo-Libyan writer is written as a memoir of a 9 yr old boy, during the summer of 1979, where his family goes through the difficult period , being on the wrong side of the regime.
A fluid , very well written prose; however from the fictional point of view, a lot to be desired.

I don't remember much of this book at all, save for the fact that I didn't really like it all. My main complaint, as far as I recall, was that it was written from the point of view of the man looking back on his childhood. But, rather than be a man's voice coming afresh to his past with new insights, it felt like Matar had forgotten the narrator had actually grown up, the prose reading as a child's account.

I'm with Stewart on this one - I couldn't finish it.
