Though in today's geopolitics Korea is the name by which we refer to that appendage to China, Korea it must be pointed out is a misnomer. Korea was a kingdom that existed centuries ago. Han Nation should be it's name proper, Han denoting a sort of suffering which cannot be easily described. In fact I won't even try -- it's too painful.

That said, I know very little of it's literature. That which I know are a few poems and the 2 or 3 novellas of a popular author that I have undertaken to translate to English. None of them (the novellas) are available I'm afraid as I'm too lazy to do the networking required for their distribution.

What I can do is recommend an alternate translation of one of the novellas that I had a keen interest in. The English title is Our Twisted Hero as translated by Patrick O'Rourke on behalf of Yi Munyol, the author. The book was recommended to me by a friend and as a friend I introduce it here. Book meet the folks at World Literature Forum. Yeah go ahead don't be shy.

So you speak Korean, Jack... Who would have thought...;)

I agree that people generally know very little about Korean literature, whether "classical" or modern. I have a lot of translated Korean poetry, but it all ends there, I'm sad to say. I have a couple of Korean films on DVD though (and am eager to see more).

Thanks for drawing our attention to Yi Munyol.
