Germany Bernhard Schlink: The Reader

This is a book i read two year ago,so my writing capacity as well as my memories will prevent me from doing a full review.
Nonetheless i would be curious to know if one of you read this.

It's a very "German" book, where the guilt of war is once again present. The story rufly is of a young man having had a affair with an older woman meet her years after at a post war trial for a hideous crime. His taking interested in her again lead him to discover a more complexe woman than he though at first.the book is far better than this summary make it seems.
The slow rythm, the revolution in the mind of the main caractere, and the simple strengh of Hanna made it a very interesting read.

I never heard before nore since of this writer but this was a excellent book and would recommande it warmly.

I don't understanding all the fuss about "The Reader". I found it mediocre at best.

However, Schlink has written a trilogy of crime novels which are in the process of being translated into English. Numbers 1 and 2 are published: Self's Punishment and Self's Deception. Number 3 Self's Murder is due to be published next year. The pun of the German title is lost in the English translation of number 3. Self or German Selb is the name of the ex-Nazi lawyer. Murder = Mord. Selbstmord means suicide. Probably not a spoiler as the German title is Selbs Mord. But I for one can't pronounce it without it sounding like the suicide word.

But I digress. Book #1, co-written with Walter Popp, is a terrific read. I'm going to read Book #2 in the next fortnight ....

.... unless I decide to read the latest stand-alone Schlink, Homecoming, instead.

Living in a remote place i never heard of the fuss you a refering to,and it not often i see his name poping up,but i guess I missed something...
A for "the reader" being mediocre at best,it's your own judgement ant by what your saying further, you seems to like the rest of his works. It was just an accident them,it's good he redeemed himself.I sure Mr Schlink would feel much better for it!

It must be 6 or 7 years since I read "The Reader" at which time, it was splashed all over the papers as a must-read. It still is touted as a must-read for bookgroups.

That's what I meant by fuss.

I enjoyed The Reader, and rated it high at the time I read it. Now, I'd say it was a good read, just not one I'd rave over and thrust at all my friends.

I enjoyed The Reader and I still remember quite a lot about it, which is saying something in itself.

Did you know they're making a Hollywood film out of it? I've seen the actors' trailers parked near where I live in Berlin...

why? what do you look for exactly?

I adore a few of Schlink's other books but I wouldn't give this one to my worst enemy. so, hard to judge.

bc I recently found out it's been translated, I recommend a children's book, called "Friedrich" by Hans Peter Richter (trans. E. Kroll, Puffin Books).
