"An art whose medium is language will always show a high degree of critical creativeness, for speech is itself a critique of life."

~ Thomas Mann (1875 - 1955)

Here, from a writer I admire, is an interesting bit about author pictures:

"Because of a publisher who got the picture on the back cover wrong, I read Balzac's works for years thinking he had Amiel's face, that is, a long, gaunt, elegant, sickly, and metaphysical face. Only later, when I discovered Balzac's true face, did his work take on new meaning and reveal itself to me. Every writer has the face of his work. So I sometimes amuse myself by thinking how I would read Victor Hugo's works if he had had Baudelaire's face, or Vallejo's work if he had looked like Neruda. But it's obvious Vallejo wouldn't have written Poemas humanos if he had had Neruda's face."

Interesting photos, especially the last one in which Brodsky shows his books: Less than One and - if I am not mistaken - A Part of Speech. This photo looks like ... a dialogue or - at least - a monologue.
