I'm currently reading Bernhard Schlick's "Self's Deception" (Germ. Selb's Betrug, Zürich, 1992). Wondered who the translator was, as it's pretty good, and finally found him credited in small print on the page opposite the Contents page.

The right of Peter Considine [sic] to be identified as the translator of this work has been (blah blah ...).

Checked him out on Wikipedia and found that Peter Constantine [sic] was born in London in 1963 to an Austrian mother and Turkish/Greek father, he is an award-winning translator in the UK and USA and has translated from German, Russian, French, Modern Greek, Ancient Greek, Italian, Albanian, Dutch and Slovene.

So wouldn't you think the publishers of the English edition of this book (Phoenix, imprint of Orion Books) have a responsibility to get his bloody name right?

This is sadly symptomatic of threads here. Someone tries to introduce the WLF to a new author that maybe few of us have read. Then some Besserwisser pounces on a typo, but does not otherwise engage in discussion. We all have a good snigger and the thread is killed stone dead. No more discussion, and the Besserwisser has scored a one-upmanship point.

That's not the way to discuss literature among the genteel classes, to which most of us belong.

Oh, I don't know, I think we can have a bit of fun at each other's expense occasionally but still keep a serious thread going if there is enough interest in it. I enjoyed mirabell's gentle remonstrance about my spelling boob re Herr Dr. Schlick/Schlink/Schmink/Schmuck/Schmo or whatever his name is. I'm very good at preaching about the motes in other people's eyes while being blissfully unaware of the beam in my own (I think I've got the idiom right). Being hoist with one's own petard is another little-used idiom that comes to mind. No offence either given or taken, I assure you.

I like preaching, Harry. Why can't Mirabell learn to preach instead of uttering those inscrutable one-liners? He always seems to be hiding from having an opinion here on the WLF, while his alter ego Shigekuni waxes lyrical and long.
