"Man ceased to be an ape, vanquished the ape, on the day the first book was written."

~ Yevgeny Zamyatin (1884 - 1937)

Lightbulb UNESCO International Translation Day 2008

I've just discovered that today, 30th September, is International Translation Day, and that it has been since 1991. So, here's a thread for it.

Now, the question: does it make a difference? Are translators aware of it? Does much come of it? And why am I only finding out about it now, halfway through the day itself?

St. Jerome is translators' patron saint: makes sense at least...

How do you even celebrate such a day? What kind of initiatives can one come up with to celebrate it?
