Re: Juan Rulfo: Pedro P?ramo
So, I was doing a little tallying of top ten favorite books lists from 200 of the most reputable contemporary Spanish and French language writers at a different thread. And I came upon this little surprise, adding up those writers' votes, the top 5 best books are:
1 Marcel Proust, A la recherche du temps perdu, 61 times mentioned
2 Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quixote, 34 times
3 James Joyce, Ulysses, 21 times
4 Homer, Iliad and Odyssey, 20 times; and
5 Juan Rulfo, Pedro Paramo, 16 times.
To give you an idea, none of Shakespeare's works or Dickens' novels made it to the top 25, neither did George Elliot, or Jane Austen.
If I were you, I'd run, not walk, to the nearest bookstore and buy Pedro Paramo to see what all the fuss is about.
To sit alone in the lamplight with a book spread out before you, and hold intimate converse with men of unseen generations, such is a pleasure beyond compare.
