    United States Thomas Pynchon: Vineland

This is a very interesting follow up to Gravity's Rainbow. I can see how after 17 years of nothing this one left people scratching their heads. I just recently started it and am about 100 pages in, so when I finish I will return with more complete thoughts. Initial impression is quite favorable though. This one is pure Pynchon, bizarre and full of paranoia, weird songs, and some incredible set pieces.

have you finished it? It's one of my favorite Pynch novels, although i gather that is not the majority opinion.

I did finish it, and I would agree that it ranks near the top of the Pynchon novels Ive read, though I gather we are vastly outnumbered by people who would disagree. I still have Against The Day sitting on the shelf but for some reason I havent been in a Pynch kind of mood for quite some time. I dont think I can start ATD unless I am totally committed.

You mean to an institution, right?

Sorry, my bad, I usually play this game with Mirabell, since we seem to understand each other and not hold grudges.

You're right. ATD is fantastic, but you can't read it half-heartedly, I think. Though it's a great, fun read.

You said it just right, DB: you need total commitment with Pynchon. But it's worth it, 100 %
