    Definitely not this book then. I mean, I guess it depends on what you’re considering “modern.” “Modern Japan” started with the Meiji Restoration in 1868. Modern Japanese history as a study generally looks back to 1555.

    If you mean present, contemporary time this novel takes place around 1912.

    The entire tetrolagy is about reincarnation though.

    Yes, I've noticed by now that it is not what I was expecting. I suppose what I meant was the beginning of the industrialisation of Japan starting with Emperor Meiji. It still seems interesting, though.
