Paris, June 11, 2009The Orange Book Award community has chosen the 2009 winner for his novel L’origine de la violence
Following several weeks of exchanging information and sharing views on their favorite books on the orange.fr/prixorangedulivre site, web users have just chosen the first Orange Book Award winner from a selection of five novels taken from an initial shortlist of 30 titles based on books published between January 1 and April 30, 2009.
The Orange Book Award represents the first literary award to involve web users throughout the award process, from the first stage commenting on their favorite books to the shortlisting and final vote, when only the online community is invited to vote.

Erik Orsenna, in the presence of the members of the official jury, made up of web users, writers and a bookseller, has today in Paris announced the results of the vote by internet users, which ended on June 6.

The 2009 Orange Book Award goes to

Present alongside Erik Orsenna and the web user members of the official jury when the results were discovered, Fabrice Humbert thanked “everyone who has made it possible for L'Origine de la violence to be part of the magnificent adventure represented by the Orange Book Award. I am proud to be the first winner of this award given by readers”.

Yes, I know Fabrice - I have known him since he was 11 years old, he is now 41. That is a long time!
I met his father at the launch of L'origine de la violence - the book was inspired by a true story. His mother was there too. His mother is remarried and very bourgeois. His father is a true bohemian.
Fabrice is remarkably intelligent, remarkably handsome and remarkably hardworking. He is also extremely talented and gets better with every book.
He deserves any/all the success he is getting.
V?lker Schl?ndorf actually bought the film rights for L'origine de la violence but, unfortunately, nothing came of it.However, another French film producer, Elie Chouraqui, acquired them so it's a question of 'watch this space'
Not much I can add .except that, personally, I think he is a great guy.

How did you come across him?

    The latest on his book:

His third book, L'origine de la violence, won two prizes last year and is coming out in English in the UK in May, 2010. His latest, his fourth, La Fortune de Sila, was longlisted for the prestigious Prix M?dicis this year. The prize was announced today. Unfortunately, he did not win.

I'm currently reading that third book of his and it's a very nice read, so far. Language is simple but clear and quite elegant, really.
