Default Germans keep Gaelic culture alive

Gaelic culture enjoys an unlikely renaissance - among the Germans - Scotsman.com

This article wasn't news to me as in my 20+ years in Scottish Studies I met numerous young Germans who were making their academic careers in the fields of Scots or Gaelic language and literature.

I remember a cute blonde young German girl telling some of us at a conference once about how she had backpacked round the Highlands and Islands and in a Highland pub she amused herself by eavesdropping on some young guys up at the bar darting furtive looks at her and discussing in Gaelic how well fit she was. Little did they know she had a Ph.D. in Gaelic. When she finally addressed them in their native lingo it was red faces all round (except hers).

One could opine that "Three Germans do not make a Ghaidhealtachd". But it is encouraging that there are Germans following the ideas of Johann Gottfried Herder, rather than those of the entarteter Einwanderer from Braunau am Inn.

I like the anecdote about the fit German blonde and the randy Gaels. Who is slapping whose thighs? Was ist ein Lederkilt?
