The sad thing is that the English-speaking countries sometimes don't get to hear about Hindi literature. Most Indian authors that are promoted in the UK and USA are Anglo-Indians.

So I have no idea how many average bookshop visitors in those countries have had the chance to read any of the shortlist in English translation, as Penguin India doesn't necessarily mean that Penguin in other parts of the world publishes such translations.

The other publishing houses of shortlist books look international enough, but my question is still: if you walk into a few Waterstone's branches in London, Birmingham, Manchester, or Glasgow, would you be able to find the majority of books on that shortlist?

I wonder whether those of you who know India or live there have any comments about whether a lot of English translations of Hindi literature can be found in English-speaking countries such as the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, NZ, South Africa, etc.
