Thread: Reworking Twain

  1. Default Reworking Twain

Its been a clever idea and clearly one that has much need to rethink the way that we write the N- word in the Mark Twain novels. I thought that the best way to rework this is to hyphenate the word. Do not print the N- word. Instead write N-g-er. In that context. It is much less offensive. Clearly does not make the reader, especially a black person feel stigmatized. Expresses the awful connotation of the original word. And it keeps the book in its true context. Just a thought. I say we do it this way. Please pass the word

I found the elimination of the n-word from Huck Finn to be ridiculous. Twain used it for a reason to make points about racism and humanity. Removing it from the text white washes the point of the novel.
My response is to make a new version with a satiric point. I am replacing the n-word with robot. I've made a video here that explains the whole thing. http://kck.st/ibzvMg

I think it's also ridiculous to call it "the n-word". The word is nigger, why not say it like that in the right context?

Yes, it's ridiculous to powder or to obscure words, to self-censor by speaking of the 'f-word' and the 'c-word', etc. It's not at all intelligent, and I find it creepy.
