Guardian blogger and book reviewer Evers had his first book published this month. It's a collection of short stories and they're well worth checking out.
The packaging alone is covet-worthy: the paperback looks like twenty cigs all lined up in a pack while the outer sleeve is cardboard, and opens like a cigarette box, from which the paperback slides.
The stories are all linked in some way to smoking. I thought this might mean a sort of wallowing in vice, with crack and other drugs being smoked, but far from it - the smoking is often a more symbolic thing, reflecting people's outsider status or their memories of people in their past.
My original review was 850 words but it was too long for the space, so the link is to a compressed 400 word version - hence a lot of what I said originally had to be cut.
