Next time you go to a book fair, and over here in Europe at least there are a lot of them (e.g. Bologna, Leipzig, Gothenburg, Frankfurt, Helsinki, London), do think about the fact that every time a particular nation is the Guest of Honour that year, a great deal of translation takes place, both of the texts themselves and promotional material.
And there are lots of translations going on in Europe that take place directly between languages other than English, often from smaller languages into larger ones such as French, Spanish, German, and Italian. In other words, translation does not only involve English and another language. Some literatures are promoted more frequently in the languages listed above than in English.
