    Default Denys Johnson-Davies (1922-2017)

Extraordinarily prolific translator from the Arabic beginning in the 1940s. More than anyone I know, he was responsible for bringing literature written in Arabic to the attention of the West. He translated Mahfouz, Idris, al-Hakim, el-Bisatie; as the Times says, "he was a one-man cottage industry."

(For the curious: I put no flag before his name because Johnson-Davies was born in Canada, lived in England and throughout the Middle East, primarily--though not at all exclusively--in Cairo.)
