Kazuo will deliver his nobel lecture in under 3 days. I wonder what he'll talk about.

A lot of this news is very gossipy and you can tell that people that have had issues with the Academy completely unrelated to to the sexual assaults are going to use it as an attempt to voice their own displeasure.

The people speaking out against Danius are being unreasonable IMO. The Academy (and the public for that matter) donít need 10+ Academy members all giving various accounts of whatís going on. The gag-order sheís instituted is probably in place because the Academy is running an internal investigation to see who knew what and if members were aware of the assaults. Iím sure it was also suggested by their lawyers.

It wouldnít surprise me if more members became inactive.

@Daniel: hehe, point taken, but I have to say, I'd prefer that to unprovoked political rants a la Harold Pinter,

Here's Ishiguro Nobel lecture, on video and in several languages for your convenience:

Meh, the lecture didnít do much for me. It was acceptable, but nowhere near some of the better ones Iíve read. I guess one of my main issues with it is that most of it is made up from tangents and childhood stories heís regurgitating after theyíve nearly all been told word for word or with more detail in other publications and interviews heís done. Nearly his entire lecture just seemed like he adapted an old Paris Review interview into a speech.

The bit at the the end about recognizing authors from other cultures (something I wholeheartedly agree with) also fell flat for me since he didnít mention a single author as an example (someone living, a past winner, etc) or a region lacking focus. It just seemed very vague and generalized.

i agree with isa about the regurgitation of the same things he says to ppl lolol i actually fell asleep listening to him good thing i closed the laptop or i mightve slept with earphones on...scaryyy

tbh though, i didn't expect him to give a lecture akin to, say, toni morrison's. which, i must admit, is the only lecture i've read and heard. oh...derek walcott's! love that. i must read all i could find!!! which are all in the website ahaha, silly me

Oddly, his Nobel Diploma is very bare and features no artwork.

Oh, so we were right about Danius giving her first speech.

Rather disappointed by the Diploma. Looks like the same person did the Medicine ones, too (calligrapher at least). All the others feature artwork.

This is an awful departure from tradition if this, in fact, is the diploma he actually received. Even the "artwork" now, when it appears, looks like processed photo-editing.

There is a long line of beautiful illustrated artwork (mainly by Bo Larsson who did the artwork from 1989-2003) which reflects themes and preoccupations of the writer's work or imaginative interpretations thereof.

Sad to see the Nobel Committee have "gone budget".

Itís not the Nobel committee, itís his diploma specifically. This yearís science laureates all had artwork on their diplomas. Thatís why itís so odd to me.

As I said, Medicine had the same design.

I really like the simplicity of Heaney's diploma, with the abundance of green being a kind of nod to his heritage,
