Manuel Bandeira, 20th. Century modernist Brazilian poet. what can you say about him? He is one the great masters of simplicity in poetry, maybe at the same level as early Heine, Verlaine, A. E. Housman and Ricardo Reis. A lot of the flavor and prosody of modern Brazilian poetry comes directly from him. Very importantly, because he came early on, a lot of his best poems are lacking the defiant, mocking or ironic tone of many of the poems of, say, Ferreira Gullar or Nicanor Parra or Drummond; Bandeira's poems can be sincere.
To paraphrase Hazlitt, 'You know more about a poet by having traveled him than by all the theories and descriptions in the world':
Andorinha/Swallow
A Swallow in my garden is crying:
- "I spent the day in vain, in vain!"
Oh Swallow, Swallow, my song is sadder!
I spent my life in vain, in vain ...
Andorinha lá fora está dizendo:
- “Passei o dia à toa, à toa!”
Andorinha, andorinha, minha cantiga é mais triste!
Passei a vida à toa, à toa…
Neologismo/Neologism
It's true, I kiss little and talk even less.
But I invent words
That reflect the deepest tenderness
And the most common ones.
I invented, for example, the verb Theeadore
with its present tense:
I Theeadore You Theodora.
Beijo pouco, falo menos ainda.
Mas invento palavras
Que traduzem a ternura mais funda
E mais cotidiana.
Inventei, por exemplo, o verbo teadorar.
Intransitivo:
Teadoro, Teodora.
Arte de Amar/The Art of Love
If you want to feel love's bliss, forget about your soul.
The soul is what spoils all loves.
Only in God can souls find satisfaction.
Never in other souls.
Only in God - or in the other world.
Souls cannot touch other souls.
Let your body get along with another body.
Because bodies understand each other, but not souls.
Consoada/That eve's meal
When the Unwanted One arrives
(maybe affectionate or maybe harsh)
I don't know if I'll be afraid.
Maybe I'll smile, or say:
- Hello there, unavoidable!
My day was good, let the night come.
(Even night has its charms.)
She'll find the field plowed , the house clean,
The table set,
With everything on its right place.
Quando a Indesejada das gentes chegar
(Não sei se dura ou caroável),
Talvez eu tenha medo.
Talvez sorria, ou diga:
- Alô, iniludível!
O meu dia foi bom, pode a noite descer.
(A noite com os seus sortilégios.)
Encontrará lavrado o campo, a casa limpa,
A mesa posta,
Com cada coisa em seu lugar.
O rio/The river
To be like the river that flows
Silently into the night.
To not fear the darkness of night.
If there are stars in the sky, to reflect them
And, if the heavens are clouded,
Since, just like the river, clouds are water,
To reflect them also without sorrow
In the peaceful river's depths.
