I had no idea that he was, according to The Guardian, "a scholar of Russian literature."

The White Hotel is a magnificent book, very Freudian.

88 is a respectful age, I'm sure he lived a long and meaningful life!

I highly recommend The White Hotel as well. I found the book's style to be quite unique, a mixture of stream-of-consciousness, psychoanalysis and realistic storytelling. It also features one of the most horrifying and gut-wrenching finales of any book I read. I haven't read his other books, but have heard that the mixture of styles and the level of abstraction in his later work was much less successful than in the triumphant White Hotel.
