Damn this Monday has been tragic! I'm completely unread about Galeano and this is a shame for me.

Re: Eduardo Galeano, aged 74, has died

I read the first volume of his Memory of Fire trilogy last year and was completely amazed. I'll have to read the rest of the trilogy this year (it was already part of my plan). It is an important assessment of the history of the Americas, and may actually be the impetus for me to do my PhD on Latin American/South American history in a few years. Regardless, much is owed to this man and his incredible talent. His size as an intellectual figure in the Americas is only met, perhaps, by Noam Chomsky.

Grass was a news here and surprisingly Galeano did not figure in any of the news here. Probable happened late on Monday. He made a huge impact on me of whatever little I've read from him.

I don't how he is read outside South America, but for us he was one of the best.

In the UK, probably not much, although his Open Veins of Latin America was republished a few years back.
