I finished this about 2 months ago, and you've pretty much summed up my feelings about it. I did really like how Li Yidou's stories began bleeding into Mo Yan's novel. Mo Yan plagiarizing his own fictional character was very meta. However the narrative became too confused near the end, and the novel just kind of limped to its conclusion.
Over all, fine writing, great concept, but the execution left something to be desired. I still really enjoyed the book though.
