The New Journalism

The New Journalism came up tangentially in another thread, so here is a thread of its own. This survey of the field is both useful and entertaining.

Mark Harris’s Mark the Glove Boy or, The Last Days of Richard Nixon, not mentioned in the Weingarten volume above, is a superb account of the 1962 California gubernatorial campaign, and an overlooked document in the history of the New Journalism, since it is a book about writing a magazine article. Getting a dust-jacketed copy is essential, since the text on the jacket was added at the last minute and is not in the book itself. (Note to university librarians: Your longstanding practice of automatically discarding dust jackets has always been completely indefensible.)
