Mark Harris’s Mark the Glove Boy or, The Last Days of Richard Nixon, not mentioned in the Weingarten volume above, is a superb account of the 1962 California gubernatorial campaign, and an overlooked document in the history of the New Journalism, since it is a book about writing a magazine article. Getting a dust-jacketed copy is essential, since the text on the jacket was added at the last minute and is not in the book itself. (Note to university librarians: Your longstanding practice of automatically discarding dust jackets has always been completely indefensible.)
