A literary representation of a depressed man - help (MA Thesis)!

Hi!

I´ve just come up with an idea for my master´s thesis in which I´d like to focus on the literary representation of depression. I´d like to use Sylvia Plath´s "The Bell Jar" but I think that the work could be more interesting if I analysed the representation of male depression too, which is not presented so frequently in literary works. Do you maybe know some interesting books concerning this topic? Since the female character has suicidal thoughts, the more depressed a man is, the better ;P The book must be written by an American author and it would be wonderful if it was published in 1960s, (however, the latter requirement is not a must).

Thank you a lot in advance for your kind help!

Holden Caulfield in the novel Catcher in the Rye is definitely depressed (though he is younger and the novel was first published in the '50s and not the '60s).
