Reports circulating now from the Archives it looks like when Solzhenitsyn won it came down to him and Patrick White. The previous year when Beckett won it was between Beckett and White. Thankfully White won soon after.

Edit: oh, it appears the full document with the reasons to award Solzhenitsyn will become available in December.
In December this year, when it has been 50 years, documents about how the Swedish Academy reasoned when it gave the literature prize to Solzhenitsyn in 1970 will become public.
Maybe I’m wrong but I saw an article today discussing it, think was Sydney Morning Herald. But how could they have known who were final 2? I’ll try and find it again.
