Nobel Prize in Literature 2008 Speculation

A little bit of chronology might not go amiss. I called it a mere collation when I had to face the fact that you were refusing to engage in any discussion whatsoever over what made a Nobel contender. This came after numerous posts and days after you started collating the list. But hey, just ignore the fact like you ignore the fact that you put forward your great age as a criterion for superior knowledge, that you called people clueless, lame, weak in rhetoric, utterly devoid of meaning, very very confused and witless. This without any prior disrespect or aggressivity shown towards you. If this board was more moderated (and I don't want it to be), all this would have been cut out of your messages and you would have been asked not to go that way again. But we're the vulture, we really are. I guess that makes you the pest.

Please, both, don't sully up the thread with this. If you must discuss it, make use of the private message system. Let's draw a line in public.

As regards Nothomb, I don't think there's anything wrong with her being on a list. After all, it's only a list. Whether she'll win the Nobel we'll never know...unless she does. ;) But then, pretty much all on Patrick's list won't win it by the very nature of the prize.

I'm sure that it will require more moderation than me at some point and to that degree I probably will ask a few to help moderate, if only to help with spam and the like if I'm not around to deal with it.

By the way, if you look under the Quick Reply box you'll see a section called Linkbacks, which provides a list of all the sites linking to this thread. I think it's quite cool to see that we have incomings from Georgia, Hungary, Sweden, and Estonia. (At least I think those are the countries based on some patchy guesswork with the languages.)

Happy to be done with it. Truly.

Yes, exactly. I was not expecting that the list would be taken so seriously, or that the inclusion of a given not-exactly-unfamous author would be found so disturbing or indefensible by some members of the board. Put in defensive posture, I did defend. I don't regret it in the least, but it is time to move on.

How's the weather, everyone? :)

Here in Paris, it's a cold sunny day. Well, all of us guys must wait less than an hour by now to know if we are right or not. This morning, on a major radio channel (France Inter), Le Cl?zio was a guest for his last novel and asked about the rumours regarding him awarding the Nobel. He just said : well, why not ? Let's hope. But very humble as usual. Though he's not one of my favourite. Here's my list completed with your suggestions and my investigations. Hope you'll enjoy it :

Joyce Carol Oates

I hope it's not another English-speaker, because if it's a non-Englisher, translators will get a bit of work.

The result of the above list at the moment (about 10:30 Swedish time) is that the leading three are Joyce Carol Oates, Tomas Transtr?mer and Bob Dylan. I suppose if Churchill can win for writing his war memoirs, Dylan can win, too.

The other leading Swedish daily, Svenska Dagbladet concentrates more on lists of people who perhaps deserved the prize but never got it, e.g. Graham Greene, Henrik Ibsen, Jorge Lu?s Borges, Franz Kafka, August Strindberg, Marcel Proust, James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Leo Tolstoy, ?mile Zola, etc.

How well the secret is kept, and whether one of the above dozen is the winner, leaked to the press, is anyone's guess. But the Swedes do tend to keep the secret till 13:00 every time.

As I said on my blog:

For me, what with such a pool of names and most not sampled, all I can do is take a wild stab in the dark. The name that keeps coming to mind is Arnošt Lustig. It may be because he scooped the Franz Kafka Prize earlier this year - Jelinek and Pinter were both awarded this in consecutive years before becoming Nobel laureates those same years - but it’s also because of selfish reasons: I would like a novelist to win it, pretty much because I rarely read poetry or drama. My loss.

That said, who I would really like to see recognised, not having read him either, is Tomas Transtr?mer. The Swedish Academy haven’t announced a Scandinavian laureate since the controversy in 1974 where Eyvind Johnson and Harry Martinson, members of the Academy, became Nobel laureates. I’d like to think, what with all Academy members from that time now dead, that the Swedish Academy feels it can now recognise its own again.

I can understand where you're coming from, but then people do translations from English into other languages too. ;)

Here are the authors mentioned in the main Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter, from among whom readers are to choose:
...and here's what their most out-spoken lit critic has had to say:
According to some peculiar but understandable logic, foreign media usually call us and ask us who we think it'll be. As if our geographical proximity to the Academy would somehow make our guesses more accurate than others'. (...) I usually give different answers every time they call. I know it's unprofessional, but hardly more so than calling here and asking about it.

I take Stewart's point about the Swedes: it is time that someone like Transtr?mer were legitimately be allowed to win, even though he is Swedish, after the Johnson-Martinson embarrassment, which is now long past.

I realise that if an English-speaker wins, his or her books will be translated with indecent haste into most world languages, only to be forgotten after a couple of years. But when a non-English author wins, this means that the pressure of curiosity does at least give one foreigner a bit of shelf-life on the otherwise very English-language shelves of British and American bookshops.

Well, Stewart, the fact you rarely read poetry or drama is all the more reason for a poet or dramatist to win: you will be forced away from your prejudice. I also read more prose than poetry, but as I get older, the tide is turning, although I read very little drama, as I always get the feeling that reading a play is second best to watching one.

On the other hand, I do not think that poetry should only be read aloud at poetry festivals, as unfeeling people swarm in and out of the hall sloshing their drinks onto the beer-sodden floor. Poetry is short enough to be read again, contemplated; at home; in an armchair; in silence.

So I would have no objection if a poet, e.g. Transtr?mer, won. And as that poet writes in Swedish, I personally wouldn't need a translation in order to apreciate his work.

Why should it be forgotten after couple of years? Just because they're English-speakers?

And why should be the haste to translate any Nobel winner indecent? What would be decent time to translate one book?
For example, in my country, whoever wins, it will take at least half year to translate it. Is that decent? Or, better - is that even haste?

I've already taken steps. A collection of both Adonis and Transtr?mer are currently in the post to me, and I've also picked up Selected Poems of Anna Akhmatova. There's a bilingual edition of Lorca - Poet In New York - floating around my shelves too.

Half-an-hour to go. Let's keep the excitement at fever pitch until Horace emerges, hedgehog-like, from the door of the Academy. (The clock here bears no relation to any time zone I know.)

If an English-speaker wins, chances are he's already been translated into several languages.
