Re: Premio Princesa de Asturias de las Letras 2016

Richard Ford has been awarded with the Premio Princesa de Asturias de las Letras 2016. Haven't read him, but don't like the fact it has been awarded back-to-back to English language writers (John Banville last year)
Anyway, what's your opinion on this chap?

I've only read a short story collection of his - Rock Springs. Enjoyable, but not particularly memorable. Ford has, however, received some major awards for his novels The Sportswriter and Independence Day.

Besides two or three scattered poems around the internet I haven't properly read him. I've read more of his interviews in which he talks about what is poetry for him and his creation and I really like his approach.

French crime novel writer Fred Vargas was awarded with this year's prize.

I think her names doesn't fit in here and I think this is a disastrous decision, based on the premise of what it could have been selected instead.
Besides, a writer in that same genre was awarded lately in the figure of Leonardo Padura in 2015.

Guess this is not the year it will force me to read laureates of any prize.

I recently read Have Mercy on Us All (what an awful translation of the original title). It was a good crime bestseller. The kind of novel you read during flights. Nothing else.

She has many books translated into Portuguese, but most are out of print. Personally, I had never heard about her prior to this announcement.

Now it's two years in a row with bad decisions. It's a shame, the prize had very solid winners from the moment it expanded from Spanish language, but hey, even in those years the very mediocre Hustvedt's husband won it.

I've never read Hustvedt, probably influenced by my dislike of her husband Paul Auster, as the two of them are prone to doing publicity together. Have you read her and is she any good?

2020 prize will be announced tomorrow. So far I've only found it will be among 28 candidates from 17 different countries but no names are mentioned. Hope they can recover from last two year's poor decisions.

Yes, I guess you cannot go wrong with this choice. I barely have read her, only her Autobiography of Red so I'm basing my judgement on the international recognition she has received.
Probably this is not good for her Nobel aspirations.

I really hope this doesn’t mean Carson will be less likely to win the Nobel. Wonderful recognition, but it’s been a really long time since these awards and the Nobel overlapped.

I guess it won't happen this year but she's a strong candidate for the next few years, no doubt about it.
