Speaking about Donoso's novel, here are some covers of the Spanish editions:

There are a few gorgeous ones. In an interesting note, copies of El obsceno pájaro de la noche were, pun intended, a rara avis in Mexican bookstores. It was a very hard to find book a few years ago, and book collectors payed good amounts for any edition (at least in México City, where I lived back then).

I was able to get my hands on a copy for not that much money, but it had the most bland cover imaginable:

I like the third one. The second one ( from up to down) looks like someone suffering from belly ache.

I like the creepiness of the first one and the stylized artwork of the third. The last few are pretty generic.

All covers are great, and what about the book? I've never read him before: only one of his novels was translated into Russian (El jardín de al lado). I checked copies on Abebooks and the price for any English edition of The obscene bird of night is pretty high.

Given how pissy the New York Times is with its website, I can't tell if this is behind a paywall or not. If it is, let me know and I will personally sit down and cut-and-paste its selection of "The Best Book Covers of 2021" as chosen by the Book Review's Art Director. Needless to say, the NYT neglects to say that these are the best book covers from the USA. God forbid they should leave their desks and venture outside!

Since we don't want access to depend upon reflexes, I will simply excerpt them (frankly, I find almost all of them to be remarkably retro):

I'm not so impressed with the two black and white covers, especially Laserwriter II as it seems way too busy. Also, if I were the publisher, I wouldn't want a novel to look like a computer manual. (though I imagine that's what they were going for). On a positive note, I like the simplicity of the Night Train artwork and the zaniness of the Soyinka cover. One other observation, I believe there are two colors that should never form the base color of a dust jacket. Any guesses? Think about it before reading on................... For me, there should be a rule, or better yet a law ?, prohibiting a yellow base color or, even worse, an off-white one.
